Institute of Immunology, Vilnius University
The Institute is engaged in fundamental and applied research work in the field of immunology, immunochemistry, molecular biology and virusology in accordance with the following research trends approved by the Government of the Republic of Lithuania: studies on molecular and cellular regularities of the immunity functioning, studies on functional activity of the immune state as well as on factors which influence the latter.
The State Institute of Immunology was founded in 1990. It became associated with the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences in 1996, while since 2002 the institute is titled as Institute of Immunology, Vilnius University. The personnel includes over 60 workers, among them 3 habilitated doctors, 23 doctors of science and 6 post-graduates.
The Institute is engaged in carrying out international and state programs. Jointly with the University of Vilnius it is granted the right to prepare post-graduates in the field of biomedicine, biology and medicine, immunology, serology, transplantation. The research workers deliver lectures at Vilnius University as well as Vilnius Pedagogical University. They participate in preparing bachelors and masters.
Post-graduate studies at the Institute include 24 doctoral dissertations defended (among them 13 post-graduates of the Institute); over 500 publications have been announced in Lithuanian and foreign press as well as 8 monographs, text-books and methodical books for students; 18 international conferences, symposia, schools for immunologists have been organized. The Institute is a coordination center of the Lithuanian Society for Immunology (President prof. V. Tamošiūnas).
The Institute has a breeding unit for inbred experimental animals.
